Dalton Smith vs. Walid Ouizza: Live Updates & Results
22:12
That’s all folks…
And with those words from the victor Dalton Smith, it’s over and out from tonight’s blog. Scotney beats 20-0 Mea Motu, Conah Walker produces one of the most dramatic turnaround victories in a British ring for many years and then Dalton Smith, back after 10 rounds, reminds us what he’s all about. Until next time.
22:09
Smith targets WBC title
After winning inside a round, Dalton Smith targets a world title fight next. He said: “It was a frustrating back end of the year and there was a lot of built up frustration. Iโm now hungrier than ever.
“I prepared for 12 rounds, Walid Ouizza had never been stopped and had beat some good opposition. To do that after 10 months out, Iโm only going to get better. It feels good to win the European title.ย
“I said before at the WBC convention; you see how this belt is silver, I want to turn it gold. In the next fight I want to turn it gold. Iโm ranked No.2 at the minute with the WBC and I want to be busy. My main aim is the winner of Alberto Puello and Sandor Martin for the WBC title.”
22:02
Punch perfect
That was about as good as it gets for Smith, who realised straight away that he was simply too good for Ouizza so took him out clinically, with an official time of 3:00 of R1. His last three fights read: Sam Maxwell TKO 7, Jose Zepeda TKO 5, Walid Ouizza TKO 1. He has now won English, British, Commonwealth and European titles. And now, aged 27, he looks every inch a potential world champion.
21:59
IT’S ALL OVER!
Dalton Smith is the new European light-welterweight champion as he crushes the badly overmatched Walid Ouizza inside a round. Smith looked razor sharp from the outset and this looked like target practice pretty much from the off. He got a breakthrough late in the round, dropping Ouizza for the first time. The Frenchman managed to get up from the first one but when Smith dropped him again with a single, leaping left hook the referee waved it off without a count.
21:54
Thunder struck
The ring walks are now done and the fighters are ready. Dalton Smith is an overwhelming favourite to do the business but can Ouizza upset those odds to win the vacant title?
21:41
Next up: main event
That’s the undercard done, now it’s time for Dalton Smith to take on 19-2 Walid Ouizza for the European light-welterweight title. We await the main event fighters.
21:38
Dog eat dog
After his incredible smash-and-grab win, Conah Walker explains where the victory came from.
“I always knew I could get here,” said the new British and Commonwealth welterweight champion. “Yes I did it the hard way tonight but thatโs what I do. I never take the easy route but I find a way. I never give up and I keep going.
“I found a shot we have worked on. Itโs not a fluke. Me and my coach work our arses off in the gym. This is our dream to become British champion. But if you can win the British champion, you can press on for world honours.
“We knew he was a good boxer. Heโs a slippery b*****d, sorry for my language. Heโs a good boxer but Iโm a dog and you canโt have a second off with a dog. Donโt ever shut off with me because Iโll find a gap.”
21:33
AND THE NEW
The official time of the stoppage is 1:23 of round 11 as Conah Walker, trailing badly on the cards, turns this fight on its head with one swing of his right hand to win the British and Commonwealth welterweight titles.
21:32
Boxing, there’s just nothing like it.
21:30
IT’S ALL OVER! WALKER DOES IT!
Scarff is a mile ahead on the cards but Walker pulls a huge right hand out of the bag with two minutes remaining in the 11th to drop the champion. Scarff climbs to his feet but he is on unsteady legs and in goes Walker for the kill. Scarff is still on his feet but shipping plenty of punishment when referee Michael Alexander steps in to end the fight and crown a new British and Commonwealth champion.
21:29
DOWN GOES SCARFF!
With a minute gone in the 11th, down goes Scarff. Can he survive?
21:23
Scarff back to it
After that moment of excitement for Walker at the end of the eighth, Scarff gets straight back into his rhythm in the ninth and does enough to win it quite clearly. The pair head into the 10th with the champion streets ahead and Walker requiring a knockdown or two to have a chance here.
21:19
Final third incoming…
In the very closing stages of the eighth Walker has his best success of the contest so far, landing with a trio of hooks with Scarff seemingly off balance. The champion fires back before the bell just to show he wasn’t hurt. Could the last four rounds open up or will Scarff cruiser this one home?
21:15
Scarff got it wrapped up?
Some really nice work from Scarff, particularly off the ropes, in the seventh round with Walker simply unable to land anything with any meaningful power anywhere on the champion’s body. Into the eighth round we head, will there be a turning tide?
21:10
Halfway stage
That’s six down and six to go and you could argue that the champion Harry Scarff has a clean sweep through the first half of the fight. Walker needs to make a breakthrough, or think of a different plan, or he will lose this by a mile.
21:07
Stick and move
So far this has been a perfect example of how a taller boxer can handle a pressure fighter if he stays switched on. Walker is getting peppered here and the marking around his eye is worsening but he is still coming forward and attempting to land something that will alter the pattern of this fight.
21:01
Four down
Walker starts the fourth well, landing a body shot but Scarff is swiftly back behind his jab. His long, left hand from the southpaw stance is also proving troublesome and Walker’s corner have to go to work on marking around his right eye. Into round five we go.
20:54
More of the same
A pretty clear pattern is emerging already, with Scarff keeping it long and attempting to keep Walker at bay while the challenger refuses to stop coming forward. What will go first – Walker’s gas tank or Scarff’s concentration?
20:50
Scarff finds feet fast
The taller, rangier Scarff gets straight behind his long jab, mainly in southpaw, throughout a first round that he probably has the better of. Walker is attempting to close the distance and apply the pressure but the champion Scarff is so far keeping it long and on his terms.
20:43
Next up: British and Commonwealth title action
It’s time for the chief support of the evening as ‘Horrible’ Harry Scarff defends his British and Commonwealth welterweight titles against Conah Walker. Both men are now in the ring…
20:32
Scotney v Skye?
After winning two belts at super-bantam, Scotney suggests she might just move up and pursue the current WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson instead.
“Of course I want to be undisputed,” she said. “I’m missing the next two belts. People have to be willing to fight me. But I’m looking at featherweight and Skye Nicolson is a fight I want. It’s a fight that can be made. Eddie says he wants the fights that mean something and that means something, right?”
20:29
Scotney speaks…
The undefeated, unified super-bantamweight champion said: “I’m not too happy with my performance but that’s probably the case with me all the time. She was a tough girl and I’ve got plenty of respect for her. Hopefully I get some credit now because I feel like nobody ever puts any respect on my name.”
20:26
Ellie Scotney UD 10
They might have had their professional debut on the exact same night back in 2020 but Scotney shows she is a class apart from Motu here – and the judges agree. All three of them score her a 99-91 winner. With the fourth round probably the one which Motu was given by the trio. A wonderful performance from Scotney, who can now attempt to pursue the other two 122lb belts.
20:24
We go to the scorecards
After 10 hard-fought rounds for the WBO and IBF world super-bantamweight titles, we await the judges’ decision. Scotney should be a clear winner, but it was not an easy night for her against the game, undefeated challenger. A great performance from the champion.
20:21
The 10th and final round…
Motu is trying her best to force her way into this fight and spends the ninth stomping forward in search of Scotney. But the champion is boxing, moving and staying well out of trouble. There is one round left here – and it’s now or never for the challenger Motu.
20:17
Eight down
Scotney continues to pepper Motu throughout the eighth of what is becoming a real showcase of the champion’s class. Her stablemates Chris Billam-Smith and Lee Cutler, the Bournemouth boys, look delighted with her work from ringside. There are two to go here and if Scotney stays on her feet she wins this by a stretch.
20:15
Phonebox war
After finding herself on the end of a number of big shots at mid to long range, Motu decides to start getting closer to Scotney in an attempt to bully her on the inside and smother the champion’s work in the seventh. It works to an extent, but not enough to win her the round with Scotney now surely clearly ahead on the cards.
20:11
Scotney going through the gears
After landing big right hands in the fifth, Scotney lands with a hard left hook in the sixth. The champion is starting to pull away here and Motu does not seem to have an answer for the class of Scotney’s work. This job is not done yet though for the Catford ace.
20:08
Big fifth for Scotney!
Scotney lands with a series of crunching right hands in the second half of the fifth and leaves Motu chasing shadows. A very good round for the champion. “She’s walking right into you,” her coach Shane McGuigan says in the corner. “I need to time her, man,” she replies. We head into the second half of the fight…
20:06
Motu comes back in the fourth
After a good third for Scotney, the challenger Motu comes back with a good fourth round of her own. The New Zealander manages to catch Scotney on the way out a few times and might have done enough to win that round. She is starting to settle in too. There are six twos to go.
20:02
Scotney into her rhythm
Motu lands a heavy left hook early in the third round but then Scotney dictates most of the remainder behind her jab, which she is starting and finishing combinations with. The champion seems to be settling in now and might have the chance to use her superior speed to start building a lead on the scorecards. Into the fourth we head…
19:56
Great job from the corner
Not much blood flow at all from the affected area throughout the second, which is another even one. A clear pattern is starting to form, with the reasonably flat-footed Motu happy to hold centre ring as Scotney moves around the outside, coming in and out of range to launch her attacks. Not much to choose from these two as of yet.
Scotney cut!
In the closing stages of an otherwise even first round, blood begins to pour from a cut above Scotney’s left eye sustained from a clash of heads up close. How much of a factor will that be in this fight with nine rounds left to go?
19:53
Here we go
Both fighters are in the ring now ahead of this 10-twos clash for the WBO, IBF and IBO titles. Somebody’s 0 has got to go here, with Scotney 9-0 and Motu 20-0. Although it could be a draw, I suppose.
19:42
World title action next
The next fight is moments away and it’s the only world title action on the card as unified super-bantamweight champion Ellie Scotney defends her titles again New Zealand’s Mea Motu. The challenger is very confident ahead of this fight and has vowed to ‘totally destroy’ Scotney. The bad news for her is that nobody has come close to doing so against the 26-year-old Catford star, who is the 9-0 IBF and WBO champion of the world.
19:41
Ibraheem Sulaimaan W PTS 8
Referee Kevin Parker scores Spider an 80-72 shut-out victor. Totally fair score after Sulaimaan’s total dominance throughout in his first ever eight rounder. Lots to like about the Birmingham youngster, who is now 7-0 (4) after 17 months as a pro.
19:35
Unchartered territory
For the first time in his career, Sulaimaan makes his way through the seventh round and now we head into the eighth and final round. This has been a patient and mature performance from the 24-year-old super-featherweight, now can he find a finish to ice the cake?
19:31
Into seven we go
Very much more of the same for Sulaimaan here, who is using his height and reach advantages to completely control the distance. Arce is still coming forward but it is turning into target practice for the Birmingham southpaw. He hasn’t lost a single minute of this fight yet.
19:26
There will be blood
Arce starting to mark up here and he’s bleeding from the nose and from a cut across the bridge of it. He looks pretty forlorn in the corner after the fifth there with Spider in total control. The good news for him is that there are only three rounds left of this.
19:22
Halfway home
That’s halfway home for Sulaimaan, who is boxing in a scheduled eight rounder for the first time tonight after racking up three stoppages in his trio of six-threes bouts. Into round five he goes and he’s steadily going through the gears here against Arce, who does not seem to have any semblance of a plan B.
19:18
three zip
Sulaimaan slips inside Arce’s jab and lands with another spiteful left hand, which wobbles the visitor. Spider applies the pressure as he goes in search of the knockdown but Arce remains on his feet. Another round in the book for Spider.
19:14
Two down
Another solid round for Spider in the books. He looks very comfortable so far and is starting to turn up the heat a little through the second. “Enjoy yourself,” he is told in the corner before the third round kicks off.
19:10
Good start for Sulaimaan
Spider Sulaimaan eases his way into business during a first round which he controlled for the most part. The switch-hitting Brummie spent all of it in southpaw and landed with a couple of sharp left hands. Arce, for his part, looks decent and game. Into the second we go.
19:04
Here comes the Spider
Hello and welcome to the live blog from tonight’s show at the Nottingham Arena. The first fight of the televised portion of the card is about to kick off and it features the undefeated Ibraheem Sulaimaan, who takes on the Argentinean Facundo Arce over eight.
Dalton Smith of Sheffield boxes France’s Walid Ouizza for the vacant European super-lightweight title in Nottingham tonight.
