Cruiserweight prospect added to Wembley bill

Lucas Roehrig and George Groves

CRUISERWEIGHT prospect Lucas Roehrig will make his Wembley Arena debut on February 1 as part of the undercard for Adam Azimโ€™s clash with Sergey Lipinets.

The 21-year-old Londoner kicked off his professional career in style last month when he stopped the 21-9 Joel McIntyre in three rounds at the Harrow Leisure Centre.

Now it has been confirmed that Roehrig, who is managed and trained by former WBA world super middleweight champion George Groves, has been added to Boxxerโ€™s February 1 show.

There is still no news on his opponent but Groves is keen to keep the standard high after his chargeโ€™s performance against two-time English champion McIntyre.

Roehrig has been staying busy over the Christmas period as he prepares for his next outing and was invited to Saudi Arabia by IBF champion Jai Opetaia, who requested the former Dale Youth amateur for sparring.

Opetaia is set to face David Nyika on January 8 and had already sparred Roehrig in London last year so was keen to bring him in again as he put the finishing touches on his preparation for this monthโ€™s fight.

Roehrig told Boxing News: โ€œHe said our spar in London was some of the best work heโ€™s had so for his manager to call us back up and ask if we can come back shows that we made a good impression.โ€

Roehrigโ€™s fight will land on the bill that already features Azim against Lipinets and the anticipated all-London showdown between Viddal Riley and Isaac Chamberlain for the English cruiserweight title.
