CANELO ALVAREZ has revealed his next opponent, and it’s not who you’d expect. Mexican superstar Alvarez will fight at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 15 of this year. In an unlikely match up he will fight England’s Rocky Fielding at super-middleweight.

The Liverpudlian caused an upset in July when he won the the WBA’s ‘regular’ super-middleweight title from Tyron Zeuge in Germany.

Only in December Canelo defeated Gennady Golovkin to win the WBC and WBA middleweight world titles. “I’m very excited to announce my next fight. Next December 15th at the New York MSG. Taking a big challenge more in my career and representing the WBC as 160lbs champion now I will fight for the world title for the 168lbs vs Rocky Fielding current WBA champion,” Alvarez stated.

This will be Canelo’s first fight in New York and his first at the historic Madison Square Garden. While he has not fought at super-middleweight before, he did box at an 164lbs catchweight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr last year.

Fielding has suffered one defeat in his 28 out career. Callum Smith, who just became the WBA’s ‘super’ super-middleweight champion, knocked him out in a single round when they fought for the British title in 2015.

His promoter Eddie Hearn remained optimistic. “Go on Rocky lad!” he said. “Pleased to confirm Rocky Fielding will defend his WBA title against Canelo December 15 at The Garden.”

Fielding said, “Living the dream… From Salford Sports Centre to Madison Square Garden. Rocky from Stocky v Canelo. Let’s do it.”

There have been some surprising match ups in the sport over recent years. This however is one of the most unlikely.
