EDUARDO NUNEZ hopes he will get his chance to face IBF super-featherweight champion Anthony Cacace.
The 27-year-old Mexican is the mandatory challenger and next in line for the Northern Irishman after stepping aside to allow Cacace to face Josh Warrington.
Cacace could have been stripped of his title, however, had he lost to Warrington after the IBF refused to sanction the bout as a first defence. Explaining their decision the sanctioning body said, “He [Warrington] has not fought in the 9st 4lb division in over a decade and has never been ranked.”
Having beaten Warrington at Wembley Stadium on points in a competitive fight, the 35-year-old must face his mandatory challenger by March 20, 2025. If he does not, then Cacace will have to vacate the belt. Since his win, though, the champion has hinted that he may move up to lightweight, where he hopes to secure himself a life-changing opportunity against Vasiliy Lomachenko or Gervonta Davis.
“Congratulations, Cacace on your win,” Nunez said on social media.
“You achieved your objective and so did I. It’s time to put our cards on the table and take care of business. Everyone knows that the next step is Cacace vs Nunez. I hope our fight will be made soon.”
Nunez, who has 27 wins inside the distance in 28 fights, last fought on August 31, knocking out veteran Colombian Miguel Marriaga in the sixth round. His only defeat occurred six years ago in Cancun when he lost to Hiram Gallardo on points in a six-round contest.
