BEN Whittaker and Liam Cameronโs hotly anticipated rematch has been put in jeopardy, with promoters Frank Warren and Ben Shalom seemingly remaining no closer to reaching a deal.
The two British light heavyweights squared off on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol in October, boxing their way towards a controversial draw.
As the overwhelming favourite, Whittaker was widely expected to come through his stern but calculated test, resuming his unbeaten surge in the professional ranks.
And yet, the rising starโs first acid test proved to be a much tougher assignment than anticipated, with Cameron producing a strong performance to make a mockery of the pre-fight odds.
Sure enough, Cameron appeared to be firmly in control, catching his flashy opponent with a series of hurtful combinations, before the pair tumbled over the top rope in the sixth round.
Soon after the shocking incident occurred, it was revealed that Whittaker had sustained injuries to his ankle and neck, preventing him from continuing the contest.
But while neither combatant seemed at fault for the WWE-style move, Cameron immediately accused the Olympic silver medallist of orchestrating a way out of their fight.
Regardless of what was said in his post-fight interview, though, the 34-year-old was ultimately forced to accept a highly contentious draw.
Naturally, a second encounter appears to be the appropriate next step, though Cameronโs recent social media post suggests that there are still a few things to iron out.
โHi [Whittaker] โ we doing this rematch or what? My promoter [Warren] has made you a very very good offer for this fight.
โYour promoter [Shalom] has knocked it back immediately saying he wants it on [a Boxxer] show, so tell him to get his wallet out [and] letโs dance,โ Cameron wrote on X yesterday.
โCannonballโ inked a promotional deal with Queensberry boss Warren shortly after the contest, looking to secure a lucrative rematch with โThe Surgeon.โ
Whittaker, too, has expressed an interest in running it back, but is yet to reveal any updates regarding his next outing.
