Ben Shalom expects Callum Simpson to face American opponent at Oakwell Stadium

BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom has confirmed that British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion Callum Simpson will return to Oakwell Stadium this summer.

Simpson, 17-0 (12 KOs), headlined a show at the home of his beloved Barnsley Football Club last August, dethroning Zak Chelli with a comprehensive unanimous decision victory.

Since then, the popular Yorkshireman has retained his titles following two emphatic stoppages on the bounce, with the first of which arriving against Steed Woodhall last month.

Just three weeks removed from his blistering performance, the 28-year-old then found himself back in the ring last Saturday, halting outspoken Ghanaian Elvis Ahorgah inside the distance.

Shortly after his fifth-round finish, Simpson revealed that he will headline another Boxxer card at Oakwell Stadium this summer, before calling out unbeaten contender Diego Pacheco and super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez.

Of course, it is highly unlikely that either of those names are in the mix to face him, but still, his promoter Shalom has nonetheless promised to deliver a world class opponent.

“[The plan is] to get a big American [opponent] – a former world champion – and push on towards world titles,” Shalom told Boxing News.

“That’s where we think Callum is at, and we need a big enough name to sell out that whole stadium. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll definitely finalise that.”

Before his last outing, both Liam Cameron and Mark Jeffers – two solid domestic operators – were mentioned as possible dance partners for Simpson.

But now, it would appear that the unbeaten Brit is set to take a monumental step-up in levels, with Shalom believing that he is not a million miles away from world honours.

As for the event itself, while Simpson was only afforded the opportunity to sell 7,000 tickets for last year’s stadium fight, a full-capacity crowd – equating to around 25,000 tickets – is expected to be in attendance this summer.
