ADRIEN BRONER has been stripped of the WBA world super-lightweight title after failing to make weight for tonight’s fight with Ashley Theophane.
Broner came in at 140.4lbs at yesterday’s weigh-in and was given two hours to lose the 0.4lb excess. Reports claim he simply did not attempt to weigh in a second time.
The WBA subsequently stripped him of their title, meaning only Theophane is eligible to win it tonight. The pair will meet at the DC Armory in Washington.
This is not the first time Broner has lost a world title on the scales, as the WBO stripped him of their super-featherweight title when he failed to make weight for his fight with Vicente Escobedo in 2012.
He came in more than three lbs over the limit that time, and went on to stop Escobedo in five rounds.
Broner arrived an hour late for the weigh-in and did not look as lean as he usually does for fights. This week it emerged that he appears to be facing felonious assault and aggravated robbery charges in his hometown of Cincinnati.
TMZ Sports allege that Broner, armed with a gun, knocked a man unconscious outside a bowling alley after a series of games that were being heavily bet on.
Despite that, and his inability to make weight, the fight will go ahead.
