Joshua Buatsi beats Willy Hutchinson on a split decision

JOSHUA Buatsi just about had the final word in his grudge match with Willy Hutchinson, prevailing by a split decision to take home the WBO Interim light-heavyweight title. The scoring was a little bizarre as judge Grzegorz Molenda favoured Hutchinson 113-112. Overruled by Salvador Salva Rodriguez, 117-108, and Howard Foster, 115-110, ultimately awarding the fight to Buatsi.

Perhaps a little disturbed by Hutchinson’s pre-fight antics, Buatsi pushed forward and took more risks than usual. Hutchinson switched his focus downstairs in the fourth to grab some momentum. The early rounds were close and competitive, with Buatsi probably nicked them with extra touches of quality.

Hutchinson was hurt in the sixth, caught in a barrage of head and body shots, seeking the sanctuary of the canvas for a break. Steve Gray dished out a count for good measure. The body shots were draining Hutchinson of energy. Trying to jump up on his toes, the Scotsman appeared to be on borrowed time as he danced and pranced to safety.

In round seven, Hutchinson was deducted a point for illegal use of the head just as his power punches started to land. A big Buatsi right hand did land at the close of the seventh as he regained control. Hutchinson came out flying in the ninth round, winging shots from all angles. As Willy tired, Buatsi needed to put it on him – and he did, scorching the body as Hutchinson went down again for a second count.

Even though Hutchinson seemed ready to go on several occasions, Buatsi opted to step off and box his way home. The winner remains unbeaten at 19-0 (13), while Hutchinson dips to 18-2 (13).
