IN this week’s Boxing News, one of the finest brains in the business, John Scully, looks closely at the situation between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez after the latter relinquished his WBC middleweight title.

Somewhere along the line, slowly but surely, the deep worth of a world championship belt has diminished so badly that more fighters in the last 30 years have voluntarily given up world titles than they have in the previous 100 years of boxing.

The truly terrible aspect of all of this is that the fans in this current era will likely never know what it is to have a line-up of reigning world champions who value their championship belts as much as they do the money they receive for defending them.
