FORMER heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has set himself an ambitious target. He wants to defend the world title more times than the legendary Joe Louis.
The thought seems far-fetched, when you consider he has fought one world title fight, which Fury did indeed win. That was back in 2015 when Fury outpointed Wladimir Klitschko. Tyson has not boxed since. The path has been cleared for him to return to the sport, but Fury doesnโt yet have another fight scheduled.
โIโve just set myself a goal of beating the great Joe Louisโ record of 25 title defences,โ Fury said on social media. โWladimir Klitschko almost beat Joe Louisโ record, until I beat him and stopped him from equalling the great Joe Louisโ record.
โSo Iโve got 25 title defences to beat in the next 10 years. Even if I have three fights in a year, Iโll beat it. Itโs going to be a hard challenge but I never set a challenge that I didnโt make and if anyoneโs capable of doing it, Iโm capable of doing it.
โWhatโs that word? Longevity. Thatโs what Iโm looking for. I ainโt no flash in the pan and youโre going to see itโฆ All comers, 26 title defences.โ
