Sugar Ray Leonard starches Dave ‘Boy’ Green TODAY IN 1980

Sugar Ray Leonard

WE Take a look back at this week in 1980, including an explosive win for Sugar Ray Leonard, in this week’s issue of Boxing News. This is out now on our app and the print version is in stores on Thursday (March 31). Here is an excerpt.

DAVE GREEN was in the unfortunate position of falling victim to perhaps the best punch of Sugar Ray Leonard’s glorious career. Defending his WBC welterweight crown, Leonard uncorked an unstoppable left hook after 2-27 of the fourth round to dislodge the Brit from his senses. Referee Arthur Mercante waved the fight off without a count when Green’s head “hit the boards with a sickening thud.”
