When and why did you start boxing:
I first walked into a boxing gym around 2008. I had some friends who boxed, and I used to go to the gym with them. It felt like home. There were these young girls on the amateur team, and that is what inspired me to want to compete. I was playing college basketball at the time, so I didnโt pursue it 100% then, but that was when I first fell in love with the sport.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Salvador Sanchez was a once-in-a-generation talent, in my opinion. Sadly, we will never know how great he could have been because he died at 23 years old in a tragic car accident. He was so smooth and balanced, with great boxing skills and conditioning. But he also had a warrior mentality and would go toe-to-toe with anyone.
Best fight youโve seen:
There are so many great fights, but Iโd have to say the best fight I have seen is Hagler vs. Hearns.
Personal career highlight:
Iโd say the highlight of my professional career would be winning the UBO lightweight title in 2023. I had to fight the undefeated prospect Angi Romero in her hometown in Colombia and came out with the first-round stoppage.
Toughest opponent:
Amanda Serrano. She is or is one of the greatest of all time. Someone I looked up to even before I ever turned pro. I was at the first Katie Taylor vs. Serrano fight while I was still an amateur. So, just two years later, to be walking down the aisle for that fight was just wild.
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
Iโd say my best attributes as a boxer would be my dedication and work ethic. Iโd say my worst attributes would definitely be the fact that I started so late. I had my first amateur fight at 28 years old.
Training tip:
Be the hardest worker in the room. And no breaks from when you start until you decide to retire. No days off.
Best friends in boxing:
There are no friends in boxing, unfortunately, but Iโd say my best friend in this game would be my coach, Monyette Flowers. He always tells me the truth, prepares me for battle, and goes to war with me every time.
What’s the attraction of boxing:
I am attracted to boxing because itโs so much more than just a sport. To be able to take away someoneโs strengths or make them do what you want them to do. Iโd say itโs an art, and you can paint a picture every time you get in the ring.
Where would you be without boxing:
I have been boxing for so long now that I am not sure where I would be without it. It has shaped my character in ways I can’t explain.
What has boxing given you:
Boxing has given me so much! Besides the discipline, the respect and the confidence, boxing has given me freedom! I get to wake up every day and do what I love. Iโve been able to travel the world. Iโve got boxing to thank for that.
Who inspires you the most and why:
Everyone who steps in that ring inspires me. This sport isnโt for just anyone. But I do want to say my dad was and is a huge inspiration to me in everything I do, and I got my drive from him for sure. I didnโt know until I got older, but he worked so hard and sacrificed so much to make sure I had a good life, and he did it all with a smile on his face.
What one thing would you change to make the sport better:
If I could pick one thing to make the sport better, it would be to eliminate the a-side and b-side politics and let the best fight the best.
Best advice received:
Stay true to boxing. It will pay off.
First-ever boxing memory:
Coach Monyette came to town from Las Vegas to watch me spar. I’m not sure I did that great because at 2 am that same evening, right after the gym, we were on the track doing sprints for my first time ever. I knew it was about to get real then.
Something not many people know about you:
I got my nickname, the “Sledgehammer”, from Coach Mike Flowers, Monyette’s dad, after watching me spar one day. I love to read, and cooking is low-key, my favourite thing to do.
I also have a son, a future professional athlete, and a star in the making. He boxes and also does baseball, soccer, wrestling, basketball, and football. Stay tuned.
