Padraig McCrory defeats Leonard Carrillo on points in Belfast

BELFAST’S Padraig McCrory outlasted a game Leonard Carrillo in Belfast’s SSE Arena, prevailing 98-91 after 10 rounds of heavy-handed activity. Carrillo took a count in round one, before hurting McCrory in return. Neither man was down again, but the hard shots flowed as two tired warriors tried to close the show. It would be interesting to see which rounds referee Hugh Russell Jr awarded each man following a contest roared on by a passionate home crowd.

In the chief support, Robbie Davies Jr avoided three defeats in a row and kept his career prospects on track by outpointing Javier Fortuna 95-94. The Liverpool boxer said beforehand that he would not accept sliding into gatekeeper status. Savvy veteran Javier Fortuna shook his head as referee Sean McAvoy raised Robbie’s glove in victory.

Tommy McCarthy opened the show with a routine 60-54 win over Ryan Labourn. Kurt Walker’s opponent, Rudy Garcia, weighed in over the limit and was deemed medically unfit despite promotional efforts to keep the fight on. Cathal McLaughlin also had his bout with Allan White pulled from the card.

On the early portion of the Belfast undercard, there were wins for Colm Murphy, Matthew Boreland, Gareth Dowling, Teo Alin, Jack O’Neill and Brandon McCarthy.
