NICOLA ADAMS’ dreams of making her Las Vegas debut were dashed just hours before she was due to open the Canelo-Golovkin bill at the T-Mobile Arena after her opponent, Alexandra Vlajk, encountered problems with a blood test.
“I’m devastated that I’m not boxing tonight, due to a problem with my opponent, thank you everyone for your support and kind messages,” Adams tweeted.
Complications with a first test meant a second test occurred, but the results could not be processed in time and the bout was cancelled as a precaution.
Earlier in the week, 35-year-old Adams – a two-time Olympic champion – spoke of her delight at being handed this American showcase.
“This is something you dream about as a kid,” she said. “It may never come true and it’s nice to think I’m able to achieve my dreams.”
Adams’ girlfriend, Marlen Esparza, did get to appear on the bill and won her first six-rounder unanimously via three scores of 60-54 over Aracely Palacios.
