Meet Billy Stanbury – the boxer who has broken his arm six times

Billy Stanbury

When and why you started boxing:
I first started because a local club had just opened up and I wanted to give it a try instead of football.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Muhammad Ali. I loved his character.

Best fight you’ve seen:
The best fight I’ve seen live was Billy Joe Saunders against Chris Eubank Jnr. The atmosphere was amazing and I’m a massive Saunders fan.

Personal career highlight:
The standout achievement for me has to be turning professional with Goodwin Boxing after a 65-bout amateur career. It was great winning my pro debut in the first round [against Martin Kabrhel in November 2019].

Toughest opponent:
A lad in the amateurs named Alex Hibberd from Golden Ring ABC. We had a great three-round war and he hit very hard.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My biggest strengths are definitely my engine and durability. In the past, my weakness has been my discipline in eating correctly and maintaining weight. However, I’ve found things a lot easier now that I have a nutritionist giving me a weekly diet to follow.

Training tip:
Always do your roadwork and don’t cut corners.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
My favourite meal is a good steak with some peppercorn sauce!

Best friends in boxing:
My coach, Richard Grigg, and the lads at Bideford Boxing Club.

Other sportsman you would like to be:
I’d be a footballer. That’s the only other sport I’ve been good at.

Last film/TV show you saw:
I’ve recently been watching Prison Break for the second time. I love it.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
Brad Pitt or Jason Statham.

Have you ever been starstruck:
Yes, when I met Billy Joe Saunders a few years ago at a show and chatted to him.

Last time you cried:
When I was leaving the ring after winning a national title as an amateur. It was the best feeling.

Best advice received:
Make the most of it while you’re young enough because you only get one chance.

Worst rumour about yourself:
I don’t think I’ve heard any.

Something not many people know about you:
I used to be very prone to injuries. I broke my arm six times as a teenager!
