LEGACY Boxing Gym, based in Winton, Dorset, and Andover, Hampshire, has become a driving force in the local boxing scene since opening its doors in 2012. Founded by Ricki Gayati, the gym is growing a reputation for its skilled boxers and willingness to compete.
Gayatiโs vision was shaped by his own experiences as a boxer himself as he dedicates all his time and hard work into making the gym what it has become today, ensuring his boxers have the best opportunities.
โI always wanted to start my own gym,โ Gayati said. โComing from a small town, when they shut down the gym, it left the town with nothing.โ
That experience motivated him to create a space where young boxers could train and grow, both in and out of the ring. But Gayati credits much of his coaching style and knowledge to his time in Basingstoke.
โPrior to opening the gym, I was training under the very experienced and respected Trevor Francis from Basingstoke, where I learned so much,โ he said. โIโve always felt like a natural leader and motivator, so it felt natural.โ

Legacy Boxing Gym has built a solid foundation in the amateur ranks, with some of the athletes having their sights set on the professional scene.
โIn 3-5 years, I think I will have a number of my amateurs doing well in the professional ranks,โ he said. โI believe the name is ever-growing and that is down to the hard work we all put in as a team. I also have a couple of my amateurs who are knocking on the international doors, via their background roots of Jamaica.โ
Gayati holds a professional coaching license, which allows him to stay involved with his fighters as they transition from the amateur to the professional level.
โAs a Pro/Am coach, this is the reason I wanted to get my licence from the board too, so that I can remain with my amateurs as they turn over,โ he explained. โI have a fair few who naturally want to go that route. A couple are closer than the rest.โ

Gayati wants his boxers to make the most of the amateurs to grow and learn with experience instead of rushing them into the pro scene.
Gayati said, โAmateur experience is invaluable and too many kids turn over too soon. If you can get a few national titles, then get the attention of a big promoter, then itโs always better.
โHaving said that, sometimes some kids are naturally more suited and ready than others with more ample experience. As similar as they sound, they are sometimes very much two different sports.โ
Under Gayatiโs leadership, Legacy Boxing Gym has grown into more than just a place to train. Itโs become a launchpad for young athletes and a pillar of the Winton community. With a clear vision and a growing reputation, the gym is attracting more and more attention, adding more boxers to its stable.
