SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHT contender Edgar Berlanga has named soon-to-be middleweight world title challenger Hamzah Sheeraz as a potential opponent on his six-man hit list.
It was reported by boxing journalist Dan Rafael towards the end of last year that Berlanga, 22-1 (17 KOs), is set to headline a Matchroom card on March 8.
However, while the event is slated to take place in Puerto Rico, an official announcement regarding a venue and opponent is still yet to emerge.
Nevertheless, Berlanga will be hoping to return to the win column after suffering a wide unanimous decision defeat to super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez last September.
The 27-year-old, in truth, was comprehensively outboxed by the pound-for-pound star, unable to produce much devastation with his notorious power.
And so, in a bid to rejoin the world scene at 168 lbs, the Puerto Rican has named six possible matchups he would be keen to secure after his next outing.
In no particular order, he called out Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo, Caleb Plant, Sheeraz, Canelo and Diego Pacheco on his social media yesterday.
In response, Sheeraz, 21-0 (17 KOs), took to X and said: โI got business to handle in afew weeks thatโs priority. Once I win IA we can talk.โ
The 25-year-old is gearing up to face WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames on February 22, featuring on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol 2.
Should he topple Adamas, though, Sheerazโs advisor, Spencer Brown, has told Boxing News that the Brit will then target unified titlist Janibek Alimkhanuly, leaving a potential clash with Berlanga, and indeed a move up to 168 lbs, up in the air.ย
