George Kambosos Jr returns to Sydney for long awaited homecoming

FORMER unified lightweight king George Kambosos Jr is gearing up for his first showdown in Sydney, Australia, since 2016.

It was announced on Friday that the 31-year-old will return to his hometown on March 22, headlining a Matchroom Boxing and DiBella Entertainment co-promoted card.

While a venue and opponent are yet to be revealed, Kambosos, 21-3 (10 KOs), explained via his social media that full details of the event will emerge next week.

โ€˜Ferociousโ€™ comes off an 11th-round stoppage defeat to Vasyl Lomachenko in May of 2024, suffering his third professional blemish in the space of just under two years.

His previous losses arrived against Devin Haney who, despite fighting on away soil, produced two comprehensive performances to outpoint the Australian back in 2022.

Before that, though, Kambosos had secured a career-best victory over Teofimo Lopez, pulling off a sizable upset to become the unified champion at 135 lbs.

And so, with the exciting contender now campaigning up at super lightweight, he will no doubt be looking to rediscover a degree of his prior form.

Regarding his next opponent, Kambosos has expressed an interest in taking on IBF titlist Richardson Hitchins, though he is likely to enter a more winnable fight before earning another world title shot.

A clash between the pair has been simmering for quite some time, with both combatants exchanging barbs on social media.

In any case, fighting on Kambosos’ undercard in March will be WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson, former bantamweight titlist Cherneka Johnson and rising heavyweight star Teremoana Jnr, all with opponents yet to be announced.
