FORMER super-middleweight world champion George Groves has begun to experience the devastating effects of Lucas Roehrigโs destructive power.
Shortly after their paths crossed at Dale Youth Amateur Boxing Club in London, England, โSaint Georgeโ decided to take the explosive cruiserweight prospect under his wing.
For quite some time, Groves had been working with the next generation of fighters at his old amateur gym, keeping an eye out for a future star of British boxing.
Sure enough, his search was put to an end after a blistering pad session with Roehrig who, having enjoyed a decorated amateur career, now looks to make his mark in the professional ranks.
Despite entering a stern test against two-time English champion Joel McIntyre, the 21-year-old was nonetheless able to breeze past his pro debut in scintillating fashion, producing an emphatic third-round stoppage victory last month.
Not only did he showcase his spiteful power, but the Londoner, a former basketball player, utilised his long levers to box fluidly at range.
Now, Roehrig is gearing up for his second six-rounder, and will feature on the undercard of Adam Azim vs Sergey Lipinets at the Wembley Arena, London, this Saturday.
As his trainer and manager, Groves looks to provide Roehrig with the best opportunities possible, firmly believing that he has the skillset and temperament to become a world champion.
At the same time, though, with fans anticipating another ruthless finish from Roehrig โ this time, showcasing his ability live on Sky Sports โ Groves knows, perhaps better than anyone, what his protรฉgรฉโs next opponent must contend with.
โIโve had a few physio appointments [since training Roehrig],โ Groves told Boxing News. โOne time, I was holding the pad wrong, so my finger got swollen and I had to get my wedding ring cut off by the jeweller.
โIโve spent the last five years being an analyst and TV pundit, so itโs nice to be back in the gym and get beaten up on the pads for a change.
โI think [Roehrig] is a special talent that can go all the way.โ
