Gennady Golovkin set for a ‘big statement’ on Saturday

FEARSOME Kazakh, Gennady Golovkin, the WBA middleweight champion, is set to defend his crown against Willie Monroe Jnr at the Forum in Inglewood in California on Saturday (May 16).

“I promise a great show. I promise a great event,” Golovkin says.

Tom Loeffler, of K2 Promotions, notes that the Kazakh  will be “the highest ticket seller in the state of California in the last two years”.

“That’s a big statement. It’s a big statement to his marketability, it’s a big statement to his style inside the ring and his style outside the ring,” Loeffler continued. “He’s a guy people like to root for. He’s a guy people like to buy a ticket to come and see because they realise not only will he provide excitement in the ring, they actually like to root for him. That’s a big statement.”

Golovkin already put in a stunning performance earlier this year in the way he vanquished Martin Murray. Another destructive appearance on HBO this Saturday will only increase the clamour to see him take on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, WBC champion Miguel Cotto or even Andre Ward.

One of the world’s best, if least known, boxers, Roman Gonzalez will also be on the bill in Inglewood. Read our interview with him HERE
