GB Boxing team progressing at Olympic qualifier

ON Tuesday at the Olympic qualification event in Samsun, Turkey, GBโ€™s new welterweight Cyrus Pattinson picked up a great win over Arajik Marutjan, beating the German, who was seeded third in this competition, on a unanimous decision, 29-28 for all three judges.

South Norwood and Victory light-heavyweight Joshua Buatsi has reached the quarter-final, unanimously outpointing Spainโ€™s Alejandro Camacho Fernandez.

Quality Irish middleweight Michael Oโ€™Reilly lost a unanimous decision to Finlandโ€™s Ilari Kujala, 30-27 and 29-28 twice. Britainโ€™s Antony Fowler beat Moldovaโ€™s Valeri Sirbu unanimously to reach the 75kgs quarter-final.

GB 56kgs Qais Ashfaqโ€™s bout was stopped on a cut though he beat Georgiaโ€™s Merab Turkadze on a technical decision.

Irelandโ€™s David Olive Joyce won at lightweight, beating Georgiaโ€™s Otar Eranosyan on a unanimous decision. GBโ€™s Joe Cordina outscored Hungaryโ€™s Miklos Varga winning every round for all three judges.

GB heavyweight Lawrence Okolie won a split decision against Roy Korving from the Netherlands. Darren Oโ€™Neill halted Swedenโ€™s Gabriel Richards in a round at 91kgs.

Britain now has 11 boxers through to the quarter-finals at the European Olympic Qualification Event.
