AN eagerly anticipated rematch between Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron remains in the balance as talks of their potential showdown continue to gather momentum.
The pair squared off in a controversial encounter last October, with Whittaker, 8-0-1 (5 KOs), suffering the first blemish of his professional career.
Despite entering their clash as a sizable underdog, former Commonwealth titlist Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), nonetheless produced an assertive performance to establish his control.
After both fighters fell out of the ring in a stunning fifth-round finish, though, Whittaker was ultimately forced to pull out of their enthralling contest due to an injury.
As a result, the Olympic silver medallist came away from his stern test with a draw, swinging the door wide open for a possible rematch this year.
In an interview with Boxing News, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn suggested that their sequel is likely to take place on April 19.
While he does not represent either fighter, Hearn revealed that, after looking to secure the same date in Birmingham, England, he was told that Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom had beaten him to it.
What is more, Shalom told Boxing News last week that he plans to stage a show in the Midlands towards the end of April, teasing an undercard matchup between Lee Cutler and Sam Eggington.
But while it would make perfect sense for a light-heavyweight showdown between Whittaker and Cameron to top the bill, Queensberry promoter Frank Warren has insisted that terms are yet to be agreed.
โThereโs no fight until anythingโs signed,โ Warren, who promotes Cameron, said during a media huddle yesterday.
