FLOYD MAYWEATHER, widely regarded as the best contemporary fighter in the sport in any weight class, is adamant that he will remain retired. In his absence the pound-for-pound leader’s throne remains empty. Gennady Golovkin, the excellent Kazakh middleweight, is one of the stars vying to take over the sport. Here he tells Boxing News his masterplan.
“I think now, the number one pound-for-pound is vacant, because there are a lot of great champions, like Chocolatito [Roman Gonzalez], Canelo [Alvarez], me: a lot of different styles. Maybe 10 per cent like my style, 10 per cent like Chocolatito’s style; Mexican people like Canelo’s style. It’s difficult, so we need time to find out who can replace Mayweather. There are a lot of candidates, maybe at the end of this year we will find out. If I can beat Canelo, [Billy Joe] Saunders, I’m going to be right there at the top,” Golovkin said.
