THE Irish National Elite Championships got underway at the National Stadium in Dublin on January 9.
Ray Moylette, a 2011 European champion, outscored Jason Conroy unanimously and is on course for a clash with 64kgs rival Ross Hickey.
โIt wasnโt easy on the eye but weโre here to get a job done and Iโm glad to get the win under my belt ,โ Moylette said.
Commonwealth Games 75kgs bronze medallist Connor Coyle progressed after edging out Emet Brennan on a split decision.
2012 Olympian Adam Nolan scored the only stoppage of the first day when he halted Craig McCarthy. Their division is an intriguing one, with experienced operator John Joe Joyce picking up a unanimous victory over Fergal Redmond.
โIโd love to compete at the European Games and we have the World championships after that but you canโt take your eye off the ball at the Elite championships. If you donโt perform at the Elite championships, then you wonโt be on the Irish team. Itโs a must win tournament,โ Nolan said.
The tournament continues January 16-17 at the National Stadium.
