Ben Davison gives cautious response on possible Fury-AJ fight

Anthony Joshua and Ben Davison

THINGS move fast in the heavyweight division. Knockouts change landscapes, retirements start and stop, and rankings and titles alter with the flick of a wrist. One thing that has remained is an appetite for Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to engage in an all-British dust-up, regardless of their records or situations.

Similar to the Amir Khan-Kell Brook straightener, even though both men had seen better days, settling the score and ticking boxes means two rivals can still generate public interest, no matter what condition they find themselves in.

One man who has felt the power of both Joshua and Fury on the pads is trainer Ben Davison. Does AJโ€™s coach believe weโ€™ll see his current charge and former fighter throw down?

โ€œI really don’t know, to be honest. And I just think that they’re entitled to do what they want to do. I think it’s important that even though I’ve come into AJ’s career in terms of his boxing life, I’ve been a small [part of AJโ€™s career].

โ€œI’ve got no right to tell him you should do this, you should do that. I can advise in terms of they’ll come to me and say what do you think about this opponent? What do you think about that fight? These are a couple of options. What do you think? Tyson, for example, he’s wanting to retire.

โ€œNobody’s got the right to turn around to him and say you can’t retire or you have to fight again because Steve down at the pub and the boxing world wants to see it. It’s not how it works. So, I think we’ll see,” Davison told One on One Boxing.

Davisonโ€™s correct that only Fury and Joshua can ultimately make the decision on whether theyโ€™ll fight. However, if Steve down the pub, along with a hundred thousand other paying punters, plus promoters and pay-per-view buyers, want it, the decision is of a more pressing nature.

โ€œBeing honest, I don’t know if we’ll see it. I don’t have the answer. If I knew that, I’d be a rich man with the bookies!โ€ said Davison.
