Australian boxer David Browne Jnr dies after title fight

AUSTRALIAN boxer David Browne Jr has died in hospital, four days after being knocked out in the last 30 seconds of a 12-round super-featherweight regional title bout with Filipino Carlo Magali in Sydney on Friday [September 11].

He initially regained consciousness before being rushed to hospital where he slipped into a coma, and his family decided to turn off his life support on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old father of two was fighting in his 25th contest and is the second Australian boxer to die in the last six months.

23-year-old Braydon Smith died in March from injuries sustained in a featherweight bout defeat to Filipino John Moralde in Queensland.

Police have confirmed a postmortem examination will be conducted and a report prepared for the coroner, while the New South Wales minister for sport, Stuart Ayres, said the Combat Sports Authority [the regulator for combat sports in New South Wales] would cooperate fully with the police in their investigation.
