Thankyou and goodnight
That concludes our blog from an unforgettable night at Wembley as Daniel Dubois knocks out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round to retain his IBF world title to add another incredible twist to this generation’s heavyweight rollercoaster. Thanks for tuning in… until next time.
22:35:58
AJ: I will be back
Anthony Joshua, minutes after his knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois, insists he will be back.
“Credit to him and his team,” Joshua said of Dubois. “We came up short but I want to say I appreciate you coming out this evening. You know I’m pissed. I’m going to keep my cool and keep it very professional”
When asked if we will see him box again, Joshua replied: “I’m always a fighter for life. We rolled the dice on success and we came up short but we will roll it again. I had a sharp, fast opponent and there were a lot of mistakes from my end. That’s the game.”
22:34:11
WARREN ON THE MIC
“I always felt it would be a Hagler-Hearns situation and that’s what it was. AJ showed his heart right to the end but it was a brilliant fight and I’m pleased because my man has won. I knew he could do it.”
22:31:59
DUBOIS SPEAKS
“Are you not entertained?? Are you not entertained???!!” Cries Daniel Dubois, to the delight of the Wembley crowd.
“It’s been a long journey and I’m grateful to be in this position. I’m a warrior until the bitter end, I’m ready to go. I’m ready to go to the top level of this game. God bless you all.”
22:29:48
AND STILL
Daniel Dubois retains his IBF world heavyweight title via vicious fifth round knockout. Official time of the stoppage is 0:59 of round five. A real passing of the baton moment. What becomes of Anthony Joshua now? Down four times and knocked out. Incredible.
22:26:06
IT’S ALL OVER
Early on in the fifth, Joshua backs up Dubois with a couple of right hands which gets the Wembley crowd on their feet, but then Dubois lands with a devastating short counter right hand which sends AJ face down to the canvas. He tries to get up but he can’t peel himself off the canvas. One of the great knockouts. Incredible.
22:24:04
AND AGAIN!!
Joshua is down again at the start of the fourth, but up he climbs once again. this time Dubois has the rest of the round to finish the two-time champion off but he can’t. In fact, by the end of the round, Joshua has recovered and looking uppercuts of his own. Round five incoming…
22:20:02
JOSHUA DOWN AGAIN!!
A bit of a mess this one. Dubois lands again, right at the end of the road, and Joshua touches down with both gloves but Marcus McDonnell decides not to count him, instead allowing Dubois to unload on Joshua who is against the ropes. Down he goes again, and up he gets again. Round four is here, can he make it through.
22:16:06
Joshua weathers the storm
This is blink and you’ll miss it type stuff. After going down in round one, Joshua regroups well in the second, he manages to land with a couple of right hands of his own but Dubois is also having success. This is turning into a classic.
22:11:52
DOWN GOES JOSHUA!!!
this is not a drill. With seconds to go of a reasonably open and entertaining first round, Dubois uncorks a huge right hand which sends Joshua down. He is up in time to beat the count and the bell sounds before Dubois can go again. Into the second we go…
22:06:17
It’s time
The national anthems are done, Michael Buffer has done the catchphrase, the crowd have essentially lost the plot. It’s time for the main event…
21:59:20
The Godfather
On his fourth ringwalk at Wembley Stadium, and his third as a headline attraction, Joshua emerges to the Godfather theme tune. He’s currently standing between two flaming letters that spell AJ. He’s on his third track so far.
21:55:52
Nervous?
Eddie Hearn suggested the enormity of this event would ensure that at some point Daniel Dubois’ ‘knees would knock’ – maybe it’s a poker face, but he does not look nervous in the slightest during this ringwalk.
Now here comes AJ.
21:52:03
HERE. WE. GO.
After all that, it’s the ring walks. Despite being defending champion, it’s Daniel Dubois who is ring walking first. Before some pyrotechnics, he walks out to a 50 Cent remix. Obviously
21:37:57
Liam Gallagher (not ranked by the IBF) currently playing…
For all those Oasis fans, let the record show, he did Rock n Roll Star, Supersonic and Cigarettes & Alcohol.
Now for the main event…
21:09:38
Story so far…
The first fight of the night produced the biggest shock so far, as Mark Chamberlain, who is famously Turki Al-Alshikh’s favourite fighter, was dropped en route to a 10-round points defeat to Josh Padley.
Then Josh Kelly beat late stand-in Ishmael Davis on points after 12 rounds he appeared to dominate, but he won it via majority decision after judge Kevin Parker somehow scored it 114-114.
Then Anthony Cacace beat a spirited Josh Warrington via unanimous decision to hold onto his IBF super-featherweight title, despite it not being officially on the line. It is now three defeats in a row for Warrington, who might retire after this one.
Then Joshua Buatsi dropped Willy Hutchinson twice en route to a split decision victory, moving him ever closer to a light-heavyweight world title shot.
And, in the chief support, Hamzah Sheeraz did Hamzah Sheeraz things by knocking out Tyler Denny in the second round to further cement his position as perhaps the best middleweight without a world title right now.
Next, it’s the big boys.
20:49:22
Early doors
This has got to be a first for a show like this. It’s not even 9pm yet and we’ve only got the main event to go. Of course, we’ve still got Liam Gallagher’s three-song set too. Most importantly, however, they are serving doughnuts in the press room.
20:42:36
Hamzah speaks…
“I always said I’m a humble man, in victory and defeat. I feel great man.
“Surely it’s the time for the world title fight now. Whoever His Excellency Turki Al-Alshikh wants me to fight, I’ll fight. Any 160lb name, I want it, let’s have it. Whenever these guys say I’m fighting next, I’ll be here.”
20:35:07
IT’S ALL OVER
Finally, in the fifth fight of the night, we get a stoppage when another couple of slashing hooks, first a right and then a left, drop Denny. He does his best to beat the count but stands up just too late for the referee’s liking and it is waved off after 2:05 of round number two. Sheeraz is the new European middleweight champion and moves to 21-0 (17). We have a potential superstar in British boxing.
20:32:04
Denny hangs on…
It looked like we would be heading for an incredibly fast finish when a left hook dropped Denny with just 12 seconds gone but the European champion regrouped well and made it through the whole round. The size difference, however, is almost comical with Sheeraz towering over the man from Rowley Regis.
20:29:15
Denny down after just 12 seconds!
20:24:35
And here comes Sheeraz…
The undefeated puncher is walked to the ring by rapper Morrisson, who wears a diamond encrusted West Ham badge round his neck. Scenes.
20:20:40
They’re not messing around tonight…
No time for interviews, certainly no sign of Liam Gallagher either. Instead, here comes European middleweight champion Tyler Denny ahead of his clash with Hamzah Sheeraz in the chief support. Nice bit of Sean Paul to go with it.
20:14:02
SPLIT DECISION… Buatsi wins!
113-112 Hutchinson, 117-108 Buatsi, 115-110 Buatsi.
What are these judges watching tonight? Buatsi wins a split decision but there is a huge swing on the cards with Grzegorz Molenda scoring Hutchinson 113-112 and Salvador Salva seeing it 117-108 to Buatsi. Madness.
But Buatsi marches on. He is now 19-0 (13) and in line for a shot at the light-heavyweight title depending on what happens when Artur Beterbiev and Dmitri Bivol finally meet next month.
20:10:54
Back to those pesky scorecards…
For the fourth time out of four fights so far tonight, we go the distance. We await the scorecards but Team Buatsi must be pretty confident of getting the nod here.
20:07:04
Into the last…
As we head into the 12th, there’s a huge ovation for Terence Crawford and an even bigger one for Tyson Fury when they are shown on the big screen.
Here comes Buatsi, who must be well ahead with two knockdowns and a point deduction for Hutchinson, in the bank. Just three minutes left of this one.
19:58:29
Hutch down again!
And it’s another body shot. But, just like the first knockdown, it happens right at the end of the round meaning there is not enough time for Buatsi to go in for the finish.
Hutchinson had actually had some early success in the round but a vicious left bolo from Buatsi, which lands on the belt, will make the ninth another 10-8 for the London resident.
19:54:36
Lights out!
No, not either of the fighters but the lights above the ring quite literally switched off towards the end of the eighth, forcing Steve Gray to call a time out. They weren’t off for long though and the round was completed. Let’s hope they stay on throughout round nine…
19:50:50
Boos for Dubois
The first sighting of IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois on the big screen is greeted by boos from the now-almost-full Wembley, which suggests we might have a very pro Anthony Joshua crowd once the main event kicks off.
In the ring, Buatsi and Hutchinson are into the eighth…
19:49:59
And now a point off for Hutchinson!
The Scotsman had been enjoying a good spell of success midway through the seventh but got a little excited and seemed to land with his head as he attempted to push Buatsi back. Referee Steve Gray, however, was having absolutely none of it and deducted a point. That is likely two 10-8 rounds in a row for Buatsi, how important might that be if this goes the distance?
19:45:58
Down goes Hutchinson!
With little over 10 seconds remaining in round six, Buatsi drops Hutchinson when a pair of body shots land. The knockdown had been the result of a very good spell for Buatsi, who also crashed home with a right hook to the head. How will Hutchinson have recovered in the break? Let’s find out in round seven…
19:42:17
Hutch Train on the move
Hutchinson lands not one, not two, but three right hooks in a row from his southpaw stance and then pops a little uppercut through the guard for good measure. But Buatsi is not hurt by any of it and he is inches away with an overhand right on the bell. At ringside, Roberto Duran is posing for pictures with Turki Al-Alshikh. These are crazy days.
19:38:14
Four down…
And it’s not exactly pretty so far. Quite an untidy fight through the first four, especially when Hutchinson is in southpaw. He is always awkward and hard to pin down and Buatsi has not worked him out just yet. You sense neither man has quite got their range yet but maybe that will change as we head into the fifth.
19:29:36
Buatsi warming up…
As is customary, Hutchinson switches between orthodox and southpaw throughout the second but it does not help him much. Instead, Buatsi starts to have some success, and seems to send the Hutch Train staggering back momentarily as an arcing right hand finds a home. Into the third…
19:26:09
Even opener
Not much to choose in an even first round, although it was Willy Hutchinson who looked to be pressing the action and seemed to get through with a right hand and an uppercut. Early days in this one…
19:17:17
Grudge match next up…
While the build up to Cacace-Warrington was very friendly, the same cannot be said of the next fight – with Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson about to get going. These two had to be pulled apart by security in their initial face-off and argued during Thursday’s final press conference. Whoever wins this will take a huge step towards a light-heavyweight world title shot. Here we go…
19:08:38
And still…CACACE UD!
with scores of: 118-110, 117-111, 117-111
There can be no complaints from Warrington as Anthony Cacace wins a reasonably clear decision on all three scorecards to ensure he leaves Wembley with the IBF super-featherweight belt in his possession. Not the fire fight many expected, but a mature, patient performance from Cacace against a spirited Warrington.
19:07:42
There was a lot of this…
19:06:14
We go to the scorecards….
After 12 complete rounds, we await the decision. Will Cacace keep his belt or has Warrington secured his first win in three?
19:05:11
Down goes Warrington… but it’s a slip!
With less than a minute to go in the 12th, Warrington goes over but Foster judges it to be a slip. Both men have lost their footing on the canvas at times in this fight, could it be a factor in the main event too?
19:00:38
One to go
Cacace is boxing beautifully on the outside and landing with long one-twos but Warrington is still trying his best to get close and work away at the body. With one round to go, Cacace must be ahead on the cards with Warrington struggling to put together any solid periods of success. With one to go, it looks like the Leeds man needs a knockout.
18:54:23
Mixed family fortunes
In between the 10th and 11th rounds, two of the Fury family are shown on the big screen to very different reactions. First, Tommy is booed loudly by the crowd before his big brother Tyson receives a huge ovation from the half-full stadium. In the ring, Cacace and Warrington head into the final three.
18:49:51
Final third
Cacace closes the eighth with a hard right hand, left hook combination with Warrington against the ropes. The Leeds Warrior appears to be slowing down a little here on his super-featherweight debut. Can he turn this around as we go into round nine?
18:47:44
Cacace keeping it long
18:41:19
Halfway point
That’s six down and this is still anyone’s fight, although Cacace must be ahead. The Belfast man is landing with the more eye-catching shots and punctuates a good sixth round with a couple of uppercuts that get through. Cacace’s corner are beginning to complain to referee Howard Foster about Warrington using his head. Into seven we go…
18:33:50
Good fourth for Cacace
Cacace lands with a big right hand early on in the round and then later forces Warrington against the ropes and gets through with a left hook and another right uppercut. He seems to be putting his shots together well so far as Turki Al-Alshikh, Tyson Fury and Eddie Hearn all discuss the action at ringside.
18:29:40
Bodywork
For the first half of round three, both men stand head-to-head in centre ring working away at the body. Warrington seems to be having success whenever they are up close but not enough to force Cacace into a backwards step. This is the sort of action we were expecting.
18:24:55
Not pretty
As the second round of Cacace-Warrington draws to a close, just a little look at the facial damage sustained by Josh Kelly in his victory over Ishmael Davis. Luckily for him, it only opened up properly in the final round.
18:20:42
Entertaining opener
As both men promised, they are straight into business from the opening bell and serve up an entertaining first round. Wembley is filling up nicely now and there are gasps from the crowd as Cacace snaps Warrington’s head back with an uppercut. This is going to be good.
18:16:08
Belt still on the line for Cacace
So a reminder for this one, the IBF refused to sanction this fight for Cacace’s super-featherweight world title so if Warrington wins he will not be champion. However, if Cacace loses, the belt will become vacant, so this is still a crucial one for both men. Warrington, let’s not forget, arrives off the back of two consecutive defeats.
18:11:59
No hanging around here…
Here comes Josh Warrington for his non-title fight against Anthony Cacace in the third fight of the night. I Predict A Riot rings around Wembley as he walks.
18:02:43
Kelly nicks it!
That was far closer on the cards than it looked from where I’m sitting. A majority decision for Josh Kelly with the judges scoring it: 114-114, 115-113, 115-114
“All credit to Ishmael Davis and his team,” Kelly says.
18:00:11
Big finish from Davis!
Finally the onslaught from Davis comes and he has Kelly in trouble with a late push which leaves the Pretty Boy with a cut above the eye and blood from the nose. However there is no knockdown, let alone a knockout, so Kelly should be comfy on the cards. We await the decision…
17:55:56
One more to go
A little bit of success for Davis in round 11 but it’s far too little and much too late. Kelly in cruise control here but there’s one more round for Davis to pull something out of the bag.
17:48:24
Championship rounds…
Into the 10th we go and Kelly has barely put a foot wrong. Kelly warned his opponent that he would show him the meaning of ‘levels’ in this fight, and so far he has done exactly that. Only a dramatic turnaround from Davis will prevent Kelly winning now.
17:44:14
Sharpshooting
Kelly starting to land with a bit more authority when he throws but it’s still only singles and Davis does not look in any trouble. He does touch down briefly right before the bell but it’s caused by a tangle of legs so no knockdown.
17:40:13
Too easy for Kelly
Davis is simply unable to apply the heat to Kelly that he promised in the build-up. The Sunderland man is in total control and must be streets ahead on the cards. A very mature performance from him so far. Into the eighth we go.
17:35:59
Halfway home for Kelly
At the midway point, Kelly must be clearly ahead after dictating most of the first six rounds with Davis pressing the action but failing to make a dent in his opponent. That’s six down, six to go.
17:31:53
Water in the basement…
Kelly starts to work the body with the straight right hand but it does little to stop Davis stomping forward. Pretty Boy, however, spends most of the round walking around with his hands down. Into the sixth we go.
17:27:53
Heating up…
There are cheers from the Davis corner as he lands with a right hand of his own before the round sparks into life in the closing seconds, with Kelly, hands down, evading punches with his head movement before coming back with a flurry of his own. The ringside Tyson Fury would have been proud of that.
17:23:41
Kelly in control
Another good round for Kelly, who again gets through with a lead right hand that Davis does not see coming. This is reasonably comfortable so far for the 2016 Olympian and Davis will need to do something to knock him out of this rhythm.
17:19:43
Two down
It is Davis smiling throughout round two as he attempts to press the action but more often than not he is left chasing shadows by Kelly, who is boxing well behind the double jab. Kelly also lands with a lead right hand while Davis gets his attention with a left hook from an orthodox stance.
17:15:29
Confident start from PBK
Kelly find an early groove and is smiling at the switch-hitting Davis as he prods and probes. Gets through with a left hook and manages to evade any real meaningful shots from the underdog.
17:07:30
Swiftly followed by Josh Kelly…
No Bob Marley for the Pretty Boy but instead his usual tune of PYT by Michael Jackson. The 30-year-old is 15-1-1 (8) and a heavy favourite with the bookmakers. Here we go…
17:04:52
Here comes Ishmael Davis…
We’re onto the second fight of the night and here comes Ishmael Davis, ring walking to Bob Marley classic Redemption Song.
The undefeated ‘Black Panther’ took this fight at extremely short notice after the withdrawal of Liam Smith and has promised an upset. Padley has already provided one big shock, now can Davis?
16:58:20
And the winner is…
Josh Padley wins by unanimous decision, and it’s well deserved. Bob Williams scored it 95-93, while Kieran McCann and Kevin Parker both scored it 96-92.
“Nobody believed in me,” says Padley. “I want the biggest. I was facing the bigger man, I’ve overcome adversity. Let’s see what fight opportunities come because I’m here for more.”
16:53:00
Off to the cards
Turki Alalshikh has finally arrived to see his favourite fighter on the ropes. Where has His Excellency been until now? Fight is over, we go to the cards. I’ve not been scoring it round by round, but surely Josh Padley has won this. Let’s see what the judges have come up with…
16:48:47
Point off for Chamberlain
In round nine, Chamberlain has been deducted a point by Mr Loughlin for repeated violations. Chamberlain is emptying the tank here with some big shots. Needs more of that. Padley’s left eye is nearly closed shut.
16:45:05
Down goes Chamberlain
Wow, Chamberlain is down from a left hook in round eight! This is turning into a nightmare night for him. Padley is full of confidence, although Chamberlain lands a good return shot. Great scrap. Padley’s eye is swelling severely.
16:40:05
Range of skills
Good point from Matthew Macklin on comms who sees Chamberlain struggling to find the range. Round seven here and Padley is still closing the distance quickly.
16:29:24
Cut above for Padley
Chamberlain has a couple of cuts to contend with. The heads are banging together as the shorter Padley burrows inside. Turning out to be a difficult evening so far for the southpaw favourite. Four rounds down.
16:23:32
All tied up
Padley is doing a good job of closing the range, launching body shots, and tying up Chamberlain. The Portsmouth man is trying to get physical and might be frustrated.
16:18:01
Size disparity
Good start for the smaller Padley. Switching up and down, appearing confident against the taller Chamberlain who is having a look. Victor Loughlin is the referee.
16:10:18
Chamberlain and Padley ready to rumble
Good afternoon, everyone. Steve is here temporarily while Dec gets his groove on. Mark Chamberlain and Josh Padley are in the ring. Fan Zone has Chamberlain as a 79% favourite, compared to Padley’s 21%.
