FORMER world champion Amir Khan continues his comeback. He will fight Samuel Vargas at the Arena Birmingham on September 8 in a welterweight contest.
Khan had leapt up to middleweight to challenge Canelo Alvarez in 2016. He suffered a devastating knockout defeat in Las Vegas. He only returned to boxing earlier this year and took a facile win over Phil Lo Greco in Liverpool. That didnโt last a round, in fact it didn’t last a minute, but Khan will hope for Vargas to last longer.
Khanโs British rival Kell Brook is due to box in London on July 28 so the hope is that the two can meet before the end of the year. But Khan warned, “โI have to get past Vargas before looking at the biggest challenges going forward. Iโm not going to be taking Vargas lightly because I know he will be coming with everything on September 8.”
He continued, “One of my aims this year was to be as active as possible so Iโm very happy to get back in the ring again so soon against Samuel Vargas.
ย โVargas is a tough and well-schooled fighter who has shared the ring with some top welterweights including Danny Garcia and Errol Spence Jr.”
The opponent for his part promised, “I’m going to give Amir hell.
He added, โI have been granted more than enough time to properly prepare for Amir and you will see the best Samuel Vargas to date. Mark my words, we might both be from the same city and county but I am nothing like Phil Lo Greco thatโs a guarantee.โ
On the undercard at the Arena Birmingham Jason Welborn willย rematch Tommy Langford for the British middleweight title. Sam Eggington and Gamal Yafai will also feature.
