A NEW boxing club has opened in Tottenham at the Selby Centre, a charity which develops the community in a deprived area. The club has converted a derelict hall into a spacious gym with new equipment thanks to significant support from the Sport England Small Grant fund, as well as Sported and Sportivate.
Olympic gold medallist James DeGale, his trainer Jim McDonnell, a former world title challenger himself, and former English champion Ashley Sexton opened the new gym on February 13 at a lively, well-attended ceremony.
โRight place, right space, trust me, this is the perfect area for a big boxing gym. You can see from the turnout today the club will be packed, it will be a major plus,โ DeGale said. โIf the boxers are disciplined, work hard and learn from their coaches, Selby will be another, very successful, London ABA, amateur boxing club. I wish Selby ABC every success, Iโm sure Iโll be hearing good things about the club in the very near future. โ
McDonnell added, โThereโs atmosphere in this gym already, itโs great to see so much enthusiasm and it appears the local community are into supporting the club. Thereโs everything here for Selby to become a successful boxing club.โ
