Scott Quigg deserved to beat Yoandris Solis say 30 boxing writers

Just two side with the Cuban while 12 agree with the draw

MAKING the first defence of his WBA super-bantamweight title after being upgraded from "Interim" Champion, Scott Quigg rallied late on to hold onto his title against Cuban Yoandris Salinas via majority draw. It certainly was a fight of two halves as Salinas calmly fought his way into a lead at the six round mark before Quigg roared on by a huge London support fought back and seemed to do just enough to win the fight.

This fight had been moved to the London O2 Arena due to the David Haye-Tyson Fury fight in Manchester being cancelled. The atmosphere was muted at the start as Salinas used his jab to silence the crowd. Most observers had Quigg three rounds down after his slow start but Quigg's trainer Joe Gallacher said beforehand that he expected this and his man would gradually increase the pressure before coming on late.

After six the champion was still behind but the pressure had increased on Salinas as Quigg was targeting the body letting his combinations go. Quigg never let up and he swept the last five rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. This matched my card as I had Quigg edging the fight 115-113 after his storming finish. At the end of the fight both boxers raised their hand to celebrate victory but when the cards were read out there was a muted response in the ring by both official teams. This was echoed by the fans who took a few seconds to realise that Quigg was still the champion because of the majority draw.

The judges scored the bout 114-114 twice (Jean Louis-Legland, Leszek Jankowaik) and 115-113 (Ruben M Garcia) to Quigg. It was such a close fight that could have gone either way and the judges, after some questionable officiating in September, at least put in cards that matched the action.

This writer’s scorecard is below along with 44 press scores and a Press score average.
